Long Lane, Southwark

About:

This scheme, located on a highly constrained site to the edge of the Kipling Estate near London Bridge, provides 21 new affordable homes, all for social rent, along with a small new shop unit.

The housing is designed to be of a standard that is comparable with, or even exceeds, the quality of much of London’s current private housing offer – with wheelchair homes particularly notable for their size. The new homes sit within two new buildings, which are conceived as a pair of solid masses wrapped in a dark brickwork with cuts ‘carved’ into this mass. Expressed through lighter brickwork, these are seen in the balcony, circulation and entrance spaces. A new communal courtyard sits at the heart of the scheme, providing residents with high quality amenity and play space.
