The Broughton House military veterans’ care home has been looking after ex-servicemen and women in Salford for over 100 years. Their previous Victorian building had reached the end of its useful life and the charity wanted to provide a wider range of accommodation and services – from support and advice to rehabilitation.
The new care home houses 65 residents with accommodation arranged in households, including specialist dementia and nursing care provision, with shared ancillary spaces and links to further communal accommodation. Our design also includes 25 extra care apartments, all with their own private external space. The apartments themselves have been carefully sized and arranged to offer ease of movement to older residents, utilising open plan spaces where appropriate.
The design concept for this project is the historical fort – a protected environment within which lived a small community. A symbolic wall envelopes the buildings whilst the wings of the care home and independent living apartments are arranged around a central landscaped courtyard, offering generous amenity for all residents.
